This blog has a bold and simple goal: to "write about every R.E.M. song, eventually." Since its launch in March, Pop Songs 07 has gone about its task with candor and seeming ease. The brief posts take on song after song from R.E.M.'s oeuvre, frequently delving into the group's history, surfacing quotes from Michael Stipe on a particular tune's origins, or refuting popular notions of a track's great success or lack thereof. The pop maven behind the site clearly adores the band, but he (or she?) isn't afraid to venture an opinion. One post asks, "Seriously now, were they even trying with "I'll Take the Rain"?" Another comments, "It's pretty clear that an entire album of this sort of thing would've been rather ill-advised." The Web's R.E.M. community has responded. Some of the posts have garnered up to 100 comments, many of them glowing with pleasure. Michael Stipe, we're just waiting for you to weigh in.

Emily Gordon is the managing editor of Print magazine in NYC. But in her off-hours, she's at the helm of Emdashes, a fascinating site devoted to The New Yorker.

We sang the praises of Emily's blog only a week ago, and in writing and researching the site, we knew we had to chat with the amazing woman behind it.

We talked at length with the eloquent editor about her blog, the Web, and the magazine she loves so dearly. Here's what she had to say...

Hey Emily, when did you start Emdashes and why?

I started Emdashes in December 2004, while working at a truly terrible magazine job, where all the people there were saints—writing about health care and science for a boss who knew nothing about either science or journalism.

I'd just been to grad school for three years and after spending all my college years and then all the years subsequently as a journalist and book critic, suddenly I had fallen somewhat off the map.

So I was reading about magazine publishing online all day, but feeling increasingly apart from it, and meanwhile still writing book reviews and other freelance pieces.

My colleague had a blog, though, for illustration and general thoughts, and I asked her how to start one—I picked emdashes as a name because of the pun, of course, but also because originally it was going to be about punctuation. Read the full profile...

The Writers Guild of America strike that began on Monday is already causing a lot of pain on both sides of the TV screen. Whether you're a "Grey's Anatomy" fan leery of Dr. McReruns or a "Colbert Report" devotee already suffering from an extra half-hour of sleep, it behooves you to be in the know.

The United Hollywood blog provides a smart, subdued, and sometimes hilarious view of the writers' side of the strike. While Jamie Lee Curtis and other supporters expressed early disdain for the writers' (the writers!) slogans, the wordsmiths have redeemed themselves here and better explained their cause. The site serves as a one-stop WGA shop, with frequent news updates and extensive video links, featuring the stars/scribes of "The Office," the show runners of "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives," and a short, easy-to-digest explanation of the issues, Capra-esquely called Why We Fight.

Clicking around unitedhollywood.com won't get Letterman back on the air in time to guess which pies his mom's made for Thanksgiving. But it can keep you up-to-date about strike developments and informed about the heroic "other" careers undertaken by some of your favorite out-of-work screenwriters.

With the proliferation of music online and off, it can be hard to separate the sucky from the superb. That difficulty in making crucial calls about cool tunes is what's led to the boom in music blogs. After all, we can all use the help of an editor.

One editor with his finger on the play button is Justin Gage. Founder of popular blog Aquarium Drunkard, Justin kicks knowledge to music fans each and every day. His genre and era-spanning love of music is apparent from his posts ranging from the brilliantly obscure to the funkily familiar.

We caught up with the busy Mr. Gage for a chat about inspiration, blogging, and music past, present, and future...

Hey Justin, when did you start Aquarium Drunkard (AD)? What was your impetus?

AD started in 2005 as a way to clue friends in to what I was into at the time, be it music, film, etc. The site took on a life of its own within a few months.

So it wasn't all about music in the beginning?

Initially, no Read the full profile...

Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr realized their gossip mag fetish wasn't really about the hot dish on who was canoodling who—it was all about what the celebs were wearing the night before. Thus was born this blog, a never-ending stream of the latest boots, hottest lipstick, newest coats, and fanciest hairstyles. You'll see how to get looks inspired by top designers and how famous folk pulled together a particularly cool outfit. And if these stylistas don't have anything nice to say, they pretty much don't say it. This isn't Go Fug Yourself. These gals report the trends they genuinely like to look at. While current hotties such as Sienna Miller and Mary-Kate Olsen do show up in these pages, WhoWhatWearDaily.com stays true to its motto: "We don't care who you're dating or if you eat. We only care about what you wear."
