Garfield may be chubby, cranky, and quick with a jibe, but that hasn't stopped him from starring in the world's most syndicated comic strip or, now, posing for a gallery's worth of variations on his image. We know almost nothing about the artists behind these portraits. But in sketches and drawings that are sometimes just scribbled on a napkin, they've capture the obese tabby's character in such amusing and witty poses as a hamburger, a fly, a Cyclops, a digestive tract, and a "rastafield." Cool, dude. In keeping with Garfield's not-so-nice nature, many of these drawings are at least a little lewd. Think "South Park" meets a disgruntled kitty on a diet. On the other hand, some of these illustrations veer toward the surreally sweet (and very funny): Wide-eyed Precious Moments, meet wider-eyed Gentleman Caller. Now, where's Odie?

It’s a tale of love—or at least, of inspirational sparks between artist and muse. Photographer and musician David Platt purchased a toy for his cat. “Chew-toy” was a hit with the kitty, who soon burnished it to a well-gnawed state. Then, as David tells it: “…one day when I was getting ready for work, I caught a glimpse of Chew-toy huddled in the corner, and it spoke to me.” What came out of that glance-across-a-crowded room is a surprising series of portraits of a cat’s toy: in vibrant, saturated colors; in black and white; in repose; in profile; in various bound positions. Andrew Wyeth had his Helga. And David has Chew-toy. May art always spring from the most unexpected, bitten-down source.

For all the advances we've made in science and technology, we have yet to truly comprehend the mental workings of the average housecat. For anyone who has lived with a feline, the mystery of a cat's mind is an all-too-familiar quandary. This site does not venture any answers to that dilemma. But it does attempt to record what one cat—the illustrious Mr. Lee—does and where he goes when left to his own devices. Mr. Lee's human companion, a clever man who lives in Germany, rigged a small digital camera to take a photo at regular intervals. He affixed the device to his cat's collar and let Mr. Lee do his thing. What came back is an amusing, sometimes fascinating peek into Mr. Lee's daily activities. The introduction and technical background provide a rundown of how the camera was altered to take the pictures and withstand its mission. We particularly liked the description of "big moment no. 1":

"Big moment no. 1: attach the collar with the camera to the cat. The reaction was not very happy but finally accepted. Reality check passed :-)"

Putting stuff on your cat is so five minutes ago. These days, it's all about cats and Wii. Yep, Nintendo's latest gaming console has feline fans too, and they're happy to pose for the cameras. Eric and Emily first noticed their kitty's fondness for the Wii, and a web site soon came purring into existence. Photos poured in from around the world. Wii wizard Gandalf wields his wand judiciously, while El Chango gnaws on the Nintendo treat. Louis plays a good Wii game, and Tindra seems to be stockpiling consoles. WiiKitty junkies can download wallpaper for their desktops and learn how to make MiKitties for their games. Living with a WiiKitty of your own? Send in a photo. Just remember, no kitties or Wiis should be harmed in the making of your entry.

The feline resume already boasts a crowded list of attributes: cuter than heck, worshipped by ancient Egyptians, subject of numerous comic strips. Now add to that list: amazing when photographed midair. Witness this portrait of a crouching tiger, flying kitty. And this guy bravely fending off a giant corkscrew. Behold feline worship: "All hail the orange fuzzy!" And see, err, catsercize? "1-2-3, 1-2-3, come on girls, it's easy." This cat laments that the other refrigerator magnets make fun of him. But he doesn't care! And ... boing! The airborne skill of these cats hardly seems fair. If cats are gonna fly, birds should be allowed to sleep all day, then gnaw on our leather shoe straps.
