What's on your desk? A picture of your sweetheart? A mountain of paperwork? Crusty dinner dishes from two nights ago? It's not necessary for your workspace to be spotless for it to be useful. Take a tour through the homes and offices of other creative souls and see what inspirational items are on their desks. From a knickknack-filled bulletin board to a jumble of paint, from a wonderland of toys to a wading pool, everyone uses different tools to get their work done. There's even a wide variety of office mascots. The workspace itself can be the muse, whether it's a cozy little box room or a vast outdoor office. Maybe now you'll see your own desk in a different light.

Some time ago, Apartment Therapy signed a lease, settled in, and opened its doors to weary renters from across the Web. Dispensing realistic yet chic advice for life in cramped quarters, the site quickly gained a well-deserved following. Today, anyone can seek solace in its metro-specific listings, recommendations, and blog posts. But it's the house tours that have healed us most. In photo excursions through domiciles in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and the occasional desert playa, we have visited sleek, one-bedroom dwellings; viewed playfully colorful rooms; and lingered in the light-filled abode of a Windy City architect. Each outing encourages close inspection, offers workaday tips and tricks, and rarely fails to inspire. Special mention must be reserved for "Jack's really small home" in Manhattan's Times Square. This laudable soul lives in an apartment that clocks in at 160 square feet. That's not an apartment. It's an exercise in well-organized, mentally fit living.

For souls with a taste for fine design, IKEA is a godsend. The affordable yet stylish furnishings offered by the Swedish retailer wind up everywhere from hip living rooms to lush lofts. This intriguing site will surely excite afficiandos of the blue and yellow behemoth. However, it truly highlights a niche of IKEA fans who break with cliches and think outside the box. The adventurous folks featured here toss aside the often indecipherable directions and remix or "hack" furnishings to their own taste. A guitar made from a table top? Check. A coffee table out of a file cabinet? Yep. A daybed transformed into a banquette? That too. With ingenious ideas like these, we heartily recommend taking a crack at some of these fun hacks.

Were you aware that Walt Disney had a furnished apartment on Disneyland's Main Street? We can't decide if that's perfectly reasonable or maybe a little strange. The Orange County Register presents this multimedia tour of Walt's crib hosted by Disney historian Tim O'Day. We are, however, very confident in our disapproval of the décor: lots of tassels and crushed red velvet. It looks like either a cozy, grandmotherly place or a 19th-century den of iniquity. You're invited to click on various items in the apartment to hear Mr. O'Day go into detail on objects like the Victrola and the rotary phone. We especially liked the grilled cheese maker in the kitchenette.

Just about anything that's well-designed, including a web site, is food for thought. In covering everything from swanky shoes and funky furniture to groovy gadgets, Sensory Impact proves our point. A design enthusiast's dream come true, this blog presents aesthetically pleasing items in an aesthetically pleasing way. Take a look at this table of ceramic cats, for instance. Not exactly useful in a Swiss Army Knife kind of way, but it sure makes for appealing eye-candy. Of course, this kind of premium bling usually costs premium scratch. That's the bad news. The good news is the site's creators have thrown in helpful tips on how to live like a rock star without declaring Chapter 11. To that we say, "Right on." Out with Ikea and in with Kravitz!
